Network Systems

QR National operates and manages Australia’s largest export coal rail network, the Central Queensland Coal Network. This 2,300 kilometre track network comprises of four major coal systems

Moura System
The Moura system is coupled with the Blackwater system to form the Capricornia Coal Chain.  It is located in Central Queensland, south west of Gladstone. The system services the industrial and rural communities of the Dawson and Callide Valleys in Central Queensland. More

Blackwater System
The Blackwater system is the largest of the four coal systems and carries the second highest tonnages on our network, after the Goonyella system. It is located in Central Queensland, and services the Bowen Basin coal region. More

Goonyella System
The Goonyella system is located in Central Queensland, and services the Bowen Basin coal region. It carries coal to the Hay Point Coal Terminal, and Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal, as well as products to other destinations by way of connections to the North Coast Line at Yukan and the Central Line via Gregory to Burngrove. More

Newlands System
The Newlands system is located at the northern end of the Bowen Basin in North Queensland. It incorporates part of the North Coast Line between Durroburra and Kaili as well as the line to the port at Abbot Point. The system services 3 mines conveying export coal to Abbot Point Coal Terminal and domestic coal to the Queensland Nickel Refinery and the Bowen Coke Works. More

Access Undertaking

QR National Network is responsible for providing, maintaining and managing access to our rail network and associated rail infrastructure. Our rail network totals 2,300 kilometres. Every application for access to our rail network is managed under a detailed process approved by competition regulator, the Queensland Competition Authority. More
