Intermodal Freight
|
QR Freight's Intermodal business offers a national network for terminal to terminal, rail linehaul services from Cairns to Perth together with value added customer solutions such as rail based warehousing. With access to more than 50 terminals and depots, we link businesses together right across Australia. Our east-coast service from Cairns to Melbourne provides the market with a seamless service for eastern seaboard freight movements. We deliver fresh produce from Cairns to Melbourne in just four days, ensuring they arrive fresh and ready for the markets. With strong technical expertise and experience, we are well placed to compete aggressively on cost and meet the increasing demand for national freight solutions. Our business incorporates linehaul service provider Interail. National Expansion Strategy Through acquisitions and strategic partnerships, including an alliance with P&O, our Intermodal business is set to become a key player in the national integrated logistics services market. In 2007/08 QRNational Intermodal hauled 1.9 million tonnes of wholesale freight across the national network. To build on this, our long term strategy recognises the need for new inland terminal capacity and new rail connections to truly capitalise on the expected growth of the $10 billion a year national general freight market that is expected to double over the next 20 years. This bold move has been backed up with the announcement in May this year of a $187 million investment in rollingstock to better service customers. Further investments include $11m for the upgrade of freight terminals in Adelaide and Perth as well as expanding the Acacia Ridge Interstate Terminal to a multi-user facility. QR owns or has access to terminals in each state capital and is in the process of acquiring new state of the art rollingstock for its national services. All of the building blocks are now in place for QR to continue forging its place in the national freight market.
