Supporting our communities in need
QR National has a long and proud history of supporting our communities during times of disaster or distress. From transporting our troops during WWII, to our staff volunteering their time to help during floods and bushfires, QR National and its people have always been honoured to play their part.
Today, the QR National Community Giving program has been set up to support efforts across the business in times of disaster. This disaster relief may include corporate donations, matching staff donations, the coordination of volunteers and inkind services.
The 2011 Queensland floods
As we all remember, this year began with a series of devastating severe weather events that left few Queensland communities untouched. Storms, floods and Cyclone Yasi all combined to deliver a trail of destruction that brought huge challenges to our communities.
In response, QR National launched a nationwide fundraising campaign among our employees for the Queensland Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal. We’re very proud to report that our employees raised over $79,000 by donating their annual leave, which was then cashed out and forwarded to the Appeal.
In addition to our employees’ efforts, QR National made donations to many disaster relief appeals, including $100,000 to the Queensland Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal, $50,000 to the Central Highlands Regional Council, $50,000 for the CQ NRL Bid Flood Appeal to help flood affected local rugby league teams, and $50,000 to Ipswich City Council’s appeal to help their most disadvantaged people.
Overall, QR National donated $329,000 to help our Queensland communities rebuild.
