A more sustainable transport choice for our customers.

QR National is one of Australia's largest integrated transport providers.

QR National aims to be a more sustainable choice of transport for our customers and rail is generally the most energy efficient, land based form of transport (refer Note 1).  

For intermodal services:

  • QR National moves one tonne of freight 147 kilometres by rail on just one litre of fuel
    (refer to Note 2)
  • One train in the intermodal service takes the equivalent of 150 trucks off the road

Our approach is:

  • More efficient use of resources;
  • Minimising our impact through handling the environment with care;
  • Building better relationships.

Each of our QR National businesses has unique environmental sustainability initiatives and objectives relating to the activities that they undertake.

QR National is in the process of consolidating these initiatives to deliver an Environmental Sustainability Strategy that will reflect both business aspirations and corporate objectives which align with these priorities, to ensure that QR National is a more sustainable choice of transport for our customers.

Note 1:
Based on benchmarking of QLD operations, QR National’s rail is generally more energy efficient compared with transport mode alternatives for bulk and long haul freight based on an independent benchmarking report completed by Apelbaum Consulting Group 2007.

Note 2:
This is calculated as an average and is based on net tonnes hauled, combined kilometres travelled for both bulk and containerised freight transport against total diesel fuel consumption for the 2007/08 period. These figures should not be relied on for calculating fuel consumption for rail transport as this may vary significantly based many factors such as on operating conditions, configurations, rail systems, ambient conditions and journey distance etc.
