QR National Apprentices

QR National is committed to finding quality men and women to undertake apprenticeships, develop skills and gain valuable qualifications in a variety of trades.

As a QR National apprentice, you will be encouraged to excel in your chosen trade, where safety, security and the environment is everybody's responsibility.

Apprenticeship Program

Applicants for the QR National Apprenticeship Program would ideally have completed an Australian year 10 certificate (or equivalent). Candidates applying for a QR National Apprenticeship will be assessed against the Numeracy & Literacy requirements for their chosen trade / certificate.

Apprenticeships we offer include:

Systems Electricians
Electrical apprentices will learn to install and maintain electrical components, wiring, equipment and systems and may work in specialised areas of the rail industry. On completion of your apprenticeship, you will be eligible to apply for a full electrical license.

General Trades
Apprentices undertaking this apprenticeship will be involved in the installation, commissioning, maintenance of equipment used for the transmission and reception of voice, image and data signals. Apprentices can specialise in the area of Broadcast - work in this area would typically include installation, commissioning, maintenance and repair of broadcast equipment used for the transmission and reception of TV and radio

Vehicle Trades
Apprentices will repair passenger vehicle bodies, manufacturing and modifying purpose-built body parts and panels for QR National's trains. Specifically, you will be involved in constructing framework sections made of various materials through shaping, welding, and cutting, working from engineering drawings.

QR National Trades

Electricians
QR National's electrical tradespeople install and maintain electrical components, wiring, equipment and systems. You'll get the opportunity to develop skills in specialised areas of the rail industry, such as servicing, plant servicing, and signalling. QR National's electricians play a vital role in ensuring that all QR National's electrical equipment is in optimal working order.

Mechanical Fitters & Tuners
QR National's mechanical fitters & turners set up machinery to manufacture engineering products, as well as to repair and replace components, or other items. They also design and manufacture modifications to locomotives and rollingstock. QR National gives you experience in leading edge equipment including milling machinery, grinding machinery, hydraulic presses, thread cutting machinery and much more.

Fabrication Trades people
QR National continually strives to identify areas for improvement and actively encourage creativity to achieve its objectives. In order to do this, QR National's fabrication professionals specialise in a number of different areas. Just some of the many roles within Fabrication are:

  • Boiler Makers: Repairing rail rollingstock such as wagons and locomotives
  • Sheet Metal Workers: Produce, manufacture and repair a wide range of light metal products such as ducts, linings and doors for rollingstock
